Big Brother Watch response to comments made by David Musker the Commander in Charge of Policing at Notting Hill Carnival

In response to comments made by David Musker the Commander in Charge of Policing at Notting Hill Carnival, Renate Samson Chief Executive of Big Brother Watch said:

“We met once with the Metropolitan Police in 2016 regarding, what we were informed would be a trial of facial recognition at the 2016 Notting Hill Carnival.

“We did not provide assurances of proportionality, legality or effectiveness of the technology.  These are assurances which can only be made by legislation or regulation by Parliament, not by a conversation with a campaigning organisation.

“We were not informed or updated on the trial after the event. Nor have we been involved in any further conversation or consultation with the Metropolitan Police on this issue to date.”
