CNBC – Campaigners warn regulation won’t stop live facial recognition eroding freedoms

Whilst some are calling for regulation of live facial recognition, privacy campaigners Big Brother Watch warn it is not enough to protect public freedoms.

“We’re not asking parliament to regulate, we’re asking parliament to immediately put a stop to it,” said Silkie Carlo, director of Big Brother Watch. “If anyone thinks it’s feasible that live facial recognition for public surveillance is possible in a rights-respecting democracy, they’d have to make a pretty convincing argument.”

As the technology improves, it will become a “perfect tool of oppression,” Carlo said, adding: “In extremis, you could live in a society where you have no chance of being anonymous.”
