CodaStory – Another US city bans police facial recognition, but it’s an uphill battle

There is a growing trend for complete bans of facial recognition technology in the US, with a third city legislature – Oakland, California – bringing in a ban, following San Francisco, California and Somerville in Massachussetts.

Legal and policy officer Griff Ferris said:

“We’re pleased to see that major cities in the US are taking action against police facial recognition, and there is now an overwhelming call for a moratorium on the police’s lawless and reckless use of the technology in the UK. MPs, rights groups and even the police’s own independent reviewers are all calling for a stop to this dangerously authoritarian technology.

“We are bringing a legal challenge against the police and the Home Secretary, and it is deeply concerning that neither are responding to these urgent calls. If they don’t take action soon, we’ll see them in court.”
