i News – CCTV used for school behavioural management

Big Brother Watch Team / September 3, 2019

The Thinking Schools Academy Trust is using CCTV footage to show recordings to children and parents as part of ‘behavioural management’ plans.

Silkie Carlo, director of Big Brother Watch, said:

The use of surveillance cameras to spy on kids’ behaviour in schools is truly Orwellian. How can the trust possibly think that the oppressive use of CCTV in their schools create “positive learning environments”?

Constant monitoring doesn’t improve behavioural issues and shows a disregard for the civil liberties that underpin our society. Children should be taught about the importance of those rights, not deprived of them.

The use of surveillance for behavioural management isn’t mentioned in the CCTV policy and it’s unclear if parents even know their children are being recorded.

This is a shocking and illegitimate use of surveillance in schools which ought to be reconsidered urgently.
