Amid growing privacy concerns surrounding the use of facial recognition, ASDA bosses in Preston have been insistent that their use of the software is for deterrence purposes and does not log personal data. However footage is kept for up to sixty days, although this can be extended if a crime is caught on tape.
ASDA claims that the software’s main purpose is to focus CCTV images, capturing an image of much better quality than regular CCTV.
A spokesperson from Big Brother Watch said:
“Excessive surveillance systems like this are designed to intimidate shoppers and change their behaviour.
“This face detection system effectively puts shoppers in the crosshairs and is a shameful way of reminding customers they’re being watched. Customers ought to be treated with respect by retail giants like Asda, not like suspects.
This overblown surveillance will likely deter many loyal customers. Asda should drop this offensive system as soon as possible.”
