It’s not just the EU regulating facial recognition – several cities in the US have already passed bans on its use for public surveillance. The UK is arguably the most surveilled democracy in the world and our Government needs to get a grip on this epidemic of live facial recognition fast. It’s growing use is becoming harder to contain and basic public freedoms are being eroded.
The analysis of human rights experts including ourselves is that a domestic ban on both police and private companies’ use of live facial recognition in our public spaces is vital. There are now overwhelming calls on parliament to pass a ban when it returns and we recommend that it urgently does so.
