Social media sites are often referred to as our modern day public squares but for all the benefits they have bought in making us more connected, they have also opened the floodgates to censorship and monitoring of speech like never before. Set to a backdrop of “Big Tech censorship”, the Government have now passed an Online Safety Bill, dubbed the “censor’s charter” by many, formally deputising Big Tech companies to act as online speech police and creating new powers to snoop on all of our messages.
