Big Brother Watch is pleased to announce Silkie Carlo as the organisation’s new Director.
Current Chief Executive Renate Samson will be leaving Big Brother Watch at the end of the year, with Silkie joining the team as Director in January.
Silkie has an illustrious background in campaigning for privacy and civil liberties and challenging the surveillance state. Big Brother Watch is thrilled to have her join and the team looks forward to working with Silkie on the many challenges facing UK citizens in 2018.
Silkie said on her appointment: “It is a great privilege to join Big Brother Watch and to lead its work at a critical time for civil liberties in the UK.
In a world permeated by data-driven and surveillance-oriented technologies, our basic freedoms to enjoy a private life and express ourselves freely are increasingly threatened.
Big Brother Watch plays a vital role defending liberties in the UK and in the current technological revolution its work has never been more important. I look forward to joining the team, taking on the challenges to come, and working on our exciting projects ahead.”
Heather Brooke, Chair of Big Brother Watch said of Silkie’s appointment: “We are delighted to welcome Silkie Carlo to Big Brother Watch.
She comes with an impressive record in advocacy and campaigning in the area of surveillance and technology. Her expertise and calm leadership will ensure Big Brother Watch continues to be the leading voice for ordinary people fighting against excessive snooping.
The Board wishes to thank outgoing Chief Executive Renate Samson for her incredible work over the past three years.”
