A man has been thrown out of Sainsbury’s in East Dulwich after its live facial recognition system wrongly flagged him as a criminal. Commenting on Sainsbury’s use of this technology Silkie Carlo, Big Brother Watch director said:

“It’s ludicrous for Sainsbury’s to scan all their shoppers with facial recognition, without permission, treating customers like criminals…

“Serious mistakes like this are inevitable when a national retailer does hundreds of thousands of ID checks indiscriminately with this sinister surveillance tech…

“People can find themselves electronically blacklisted from their supermarkets and high streets with no fair process and without even being told…

“Live facial recognition is an Orwellian nightmare that does nothing to stop hardened thieves whilst stealing the privacy rights of millions of paying customers. Sainsbury’s should drop live facial recognition urgently, before more appalling incidents like this.”
