To mark the formal launch of Big Brother Watch’s State of Free Speech Online report we are hosting a discussion about the state of free speech online and the coming policy challenges in this area.
Speakers include: David Davis MP, Lord Hunt, Ash Sarkar (Novara Media), Viscount Colville,
Richard Earley (Facebook) Baroness Fox, Richard Wingfield (Global Partners Digital) Silkie Carlo (Big Brother Watch).
Our new report, The State of Free Speech Online, examines the current state of social
media censorship with a catalogue of examples, conducting analysis of platforms’ terms
of use and how they match up to human rights standards, before setting out some of the
policy challenges ahead in this area, including with the coming Online Safety Bill.
The report is the product of over 2 years of research, during which major themes have
emerged around speech regarding sex, gender and race; political posts; and posts relating to health, from mental health to Covid-19.
Some of the banned posts in the report could be considered disagreeable, misguided or
even offensive but all of them bring into question the extent to which corporate and
state powers should be permitted to silence lawful speech. We have sent you a copy of
the report separately.

The Online Safety Bill poses one of the greatest threats to free speech of any UK law in living memory
We’re calling on the Government to drop measures to suppress lawful speech from the Bill
